It's an unlikely subsidiary of Nashville. A bleak and dismal area of California, sunk in the San Joaquin Valley between the Sierra Madre and beautiful Sierra Nevada, the town of Bakersfield sits exposed to the extremes of weather, a waiting spot between Fresno to the north and Los Angeles to the south; it missed the Interstate, as I-5 aims for Bakersfield but ends up passing it by to the west in a straight shot to Sacramento, rather, only State Route 99 passes through Bakersfield, connecting it to the rest of the San Joaquin farming towns, Tulare and Fresno. The Kern River weaves its meandering way through the northern part of town, coming from the peaks of the Sierra Nevada to eventually end up simply petering out, the remnants of Lake Buena Vista (dry) southwest of town, all water circumvented by the great California Aqueduct. He Was (click on album cover at left for review) The March 1965 issue of Music City News carried a paid ad from Buck. In his "Pledge To Country Music," he stated: I Shall Sing No Song That Is Not A Country Song. I Shall Make No Record That Is Not A Country Record. I Refuse To be Known As Anything But A Country Singer. I Am Proud To be Associated With Country Music.

Quote: "If you are bitten by this thing we have come to call the Bakersfield Sound it becomes a part of you. It reaches out to every part of your heart and your soul and becomes the thing that you need to survive. You need that music. It goes beyond logic. It is something that feeds your spirit. And I know I am not the only one who feels that way. This music we make here is special. It calls to you. And you hear it calling to you. No matter how faint, you feel it. There is nothing else like it in the world!" Roy Nichols |
