Ring Of Fire
by Johnny Cash
Written By: June Carter/Merle Kilgore
Recorded: March 25, 1963; Nashville, TN
Peak Position: #1 (Country); #17 (Pop)

Johnny Cash has had many hits over the years including 1963's "Ring Of Fire." Written by June Carter (before she was June Carter Cash) and Merle Kilgore, the song idea came from a book of Elizabethian poetry that used to belong to June's uncle, A.P. Carter.

June and Merle had been writing songs all day and were finished when June received a telephone call from her sister, Anita Carter. Anita was in the studio recording an album and needed another song, so June and Merle wrote "Ring Of Fire" in fifteen minutes. Anita recorded "Love's Ring Of Fire," but it wasn't a smash hit until Johnny cut it as "Ring Of Fire" for his own album in 1963.

Johnny had a dream that he heard the song being performed with trumpets. He immediately called his producer, Don Law, and told him to book two trumpet players for the session because he wanted trumpets on this track. Skeptically, Law did as Johnny asked and was obviously pleased with the arrangement.

"Ring Of Fire" was Johnny's first number one hit in the 60's and his first top twenty pop hit on Columbia Records.
