REVIEW: Christine Mims - Perfect For A Rainy Day

(Yellow Rose Records) Christine Mims grew up in South Texas on her parents cattle ranch and sang every Sunday in her grandfather’s church. Her first singing audition resulted in her being chosen to perform in the "Music Country Music" show at Fiesta Texas in San Antonio. She went on to become the featured vocalist at San Antonio's Bluebonnet Palace where she opened for such nationally renowned performers that includes Merle Haggard and Tracy Byrd. The music directors at Opryland USA took notice of Christine’s talent and performed in their productions in Las Vegas and Nashville. While in Nashville, she spent time working and recording demos for Tom T. Hall Enterprises, as well as lending her voice to other music projects.

Perfect For A Rainy Day is Christine's debut album. Produced by Bobby Flores, Christine is backed in the studio by: Dan Dreeben (drums), Allen "Conway Chapman, Hamilton Price (bass), Andy Langham (piano), Bobby Flores (rhythm & electric guitars, fiddle, violin), Tommy Detamore (electric & steel guitars), Randy Reinhard (piano, steel guitar), Rene Saenz (sax), Gerald Schoetzel (viola) and John Stuart (cello).

Christine turns back the clock on Perfect For A Rainy Day and dusts off gems from Ray Price, Roger Miller, Buck Owens, Dallas Frazier, Floyd Tillman and Hank Cochran and mixes them with songs from a couple of more contemporary songwriters such as David Anthony and Roger Brown. The resulting album is packed with Texas dancehall music. She delivers classic shuffles ("Invitation To The Blues," "Ain't No Lovin'," "Another Chance," and "Under Your Spell"), a fast waltz ("Each Time") and torchy barroom weepers ("Don't Touch Me," "Lonely Street," and "Cold, Cold War"). Christine also possesses a brilliant jazzier side and infuses it into the mid-tempo title track, "Perfect For A Rainy Day," two smokey noir ballads, "I've Had It With You" and a terrific cover of the Julie London hit, "Cry Me A River" and she closes out with a swinging "Say What's On Your Mind."

Although most of the songs on Perfect For A Rainy Day are well known classics, Christine proves herself a strong stylist and makes them her own. On the jazzier songs, she shows a great knack for phrasing. Along with a strong and supple voice that has a lot of range, with Perfect For A Rainy Day, Christine Mims has delivered an album that's perfect for any old day.
