Have you ever wondered what
Martina McBride might sound like if she used her magnificent voice for good
rather than evil? The answer might be here in Kelly Lang, who has the same
amazing range, inflection, and quality... but Kelly sings quality.
With this debut album, Kelly Lang ("Nashville Star" finalist and three-time
"Star Search" winner) demonstrates a solid ability and a powerful country singer
who can easily attract listeners of the "new" stuff while grounding herself
firmly in the classic, real country side of things.
Starting with the moving tribute to Conway Twitty, "Goodbye Darlin'," Lang tells
us where she's coming from, and she proceeds with such strong tracks as
"Something 'Bout Ya," "Down in Destin," and "He's Too Good To Be Blue." While
the first single, "Single Mother," is one of those
overly-emotional-yet-inspirational "feel good" modern country songs, it's done
so well it's almost all right to have yet another of this sort of song out
there; the only trouble is, there's another one here, "Looking Down." I hope she
leans more on the real emotion that she does so well and less on these sorts of
obvious, emotionally manipulative songs that litter the mainstream airwaves.
Last word: There's a real strong country talent here, and it'll be nice
to see her take it in that obvious direction and not follow the pack.
Standout tracks: "Goodbye Darlin'," "Party Time," "Down in Destin," "When
We Loved Here."
